Why people add it
Original Medicare generally does not cover routine dental or vision care. Cleanings, exams, glasses, and most dental work fall outside of it, which surprises a lot of households in their first year on Medicare.
Some Medicare Advantage plans include a limited dental or vision benefit, and how far that benefit goes differs from plan to plan. A stand-alone dental or vision plan can fill in what is left. Which route makes sense depends on the coverage you already hold and the care you actually use.
What it covers
Dental and vision plans are usually organized around a few broad categories of care.
Cleanings, exams, and routine x-rays. This is the category most plans cover soonest and most generously.
Work such as crowns, bridges, dentures, or extractions. These are generally covered at a lower share and may involve a waiting period.
Routine eye exams along with an allowance toward eyewear such as glasses or contact lenses.
Most plans cap what they pay over a year and set how often a service is available. Those details vary, so we go through them with you rather than generalizing.
Fit
With Original Medicare and a Medicare Supplement, dental and vision are not part of the picture at all, so a stand-alone plan is usually the way people add them.
With a Medicare Advantage plan, you may already have some benefit built in. The question becomes whether it is enough for the care you expect, and whether adding a stand-alone plan alongside it is worth the cost.
For households under 65 on marketplace coverage, dental and vision are often handled separately as well, sometimes through the marketplace and sometimes through a stand-alone plan. To speak with a licensed insurance agent, call (662) 210-2200. TTY: 711.
