Who this is for

Coverage between employer plans and Medicare

Marketplace coverage, sometimes called ACA or Affordable Care Act coverage, is individual and family health insurance you buy on your own rather than through an employer.

It is most often used by people who are self-employed, between jobs, retired earlier than 65, or part of a family without access to employer coverage. We help you compare the plans offered in your county and understand what each one asks of you at the doctor's office and the pharmacy.

Plan levels

Metal tiers, explained simply

Marketplace plans are grouped into metal tiers. The tier describes the general balance between what you pay monthly and what you pay when you use care — not the quality of the medical care itself.

Bronze

Lowest monthly premium of the tiers, with the most cost left to you when you use care. Often considered by people who mainly want protection from a large medical event.

Silver

A middle ground on premium and cost sharing. Silver is also the tier tied to additional cost-sharing reductions for some households.

Gold

Higher monthly premium with lower cost sharing when care is used. Often considered by people who see providers regularly.

Platinum

Highest monthly premium of the tiers with the lowest cost sharing. Availability varies by area and is not offered everywhere.

Cost

Premium assistance

Many households qualify to apply for tax credits that lower the monthly premium. Whether that applies to you depends on estimated household income, household size, and the plans offered where you live.

We can walk through how the credit works and what documentation the application asks for. To speak with a licensed insurance agent, call (662) 210-2200. TTY: 711.

Timing

When you can enroll

The Open Enrollment Period runs November 1 – December 15 for the current plan year. That is the annual window when anyone eligible may enroll in or change a Marketplace plan.

Special Enrollment Periods open after qualifying life events such as losing a job or other coverage, marriage, or having a baby. These windows are limited in length, so it helps to start the conversation soon after the event.
