Traditional long-term care insurance
Coverage designed specifically to pay toward qualifying care. It is generally the most direct approach, and the benefit is only used if care is needed.

The gap
Long-term care coverage is built for the kind of extended care Medicare mostly does not pay for: home health aides, assisted living, and nursing facility stays that go on for months or years.
This is the part most households learn late. Medicare generally covers only limited skilled nursing care after a qualifying hospital stay — it does not cover ongoing custodial care, meaning day-to-day help with bathing, dressing, meals, and moving around. That cost falls to savings unless something else is in place.
Approaches
Most planning conversations land in one of two directions.
Coverage designed specifically to pay toward qualifying care. It is generally the most direct approach, and the benefit is only used if care is needed.
A life insurance policy that can be used for qualifying long-term care expenses, and that pays a death benefit if care is never needed. Households often prefer this because the money is not forfeited.
Timing
Qualifying depends on health at the time you apply, so this coverage is typically easier to obtain while you are still healthy. That is why planning conversations often happen well before anyone expects to use care.
There is no urgency to decide anything in a single conversation. We will lay out what each approach does and does not do, what the application process looks like, and what happens if you decide to wait. To speak with a licensed insurance agent, call (662) 210-2200. TTY: 711.
